ICML CREW UPDATE : TOM HOBSON
Since bidding farewell to the mean streets of Bedminster and transplanting to the mean streets of Bethnal Green I have been keeping busy. I had a solo show at ROGUE project space in Manchester during April which contained a lot of new work made after the ICML show Black Rainbow. Massive thanks to Magnus, Paul, Stu, Maeve, Tom, Liz e.t.c. and everyone in Manchester.

Magnus Quaife (pictured below) made me eat pizza from Babylon and we enjoyed the Mancunian delicacy of raw sausage sandwiches for breakfast.

I also travelled to Cardiff for the Book Arts Fayre that I co-curated at Ffotogallery http://ffotogallerybookartsfayre.wordpress.com
That event also saw the launch of a publication called ‘FORA’ containing submissions from 14 members of the artist collective FORUM that I started in Cardiff. You can see a copy of the publication here http://ffotogallery-forum.blogspot.com/2010/04/fora-one-launch-at-book-arts-fayre.html ..

Currently I am stoked to be directing (ha!) a project called SHINER at studio 17b at Chisenhale Art Place. SHINER is an experimental project space that I will be running for a year. For more information on SHINER or to get involved please visit

I also shaved off my moustache.

In the sentence structuring of Jedi master Yoda: A very busy bunch we have been. And very spread out our group it has been, yes. 3 members are living in London at the moment and 1 in Dubai. However, plans are in progress to initiate a second wave of ICML activity very soon. In the mean time, you can catch a wonderful online artwork commission for The Two Jonny's gallery, London by ICML devotee, Rhys Coren here:

Hello! We have a bit of a good news / bad news scenario here and I guess it is pretty customary to get the bad news out of the way first, yeah? Not today, though. I guess we'd rather build you up with some good news first, then bring you crashing down to earth with the bad news second. The good news is that we, as artists, are all incredibly busy with our own work at the moment. One ICML member has gone as far as Dubai, whilst the others spread more modestly across the UK. The bad news is we are having to postpone our travel for Issue # 4 due to our business. We are sorry. But one major downside to anything 'artist-led' is that the artists leading it must also make their own work.
We did, however, have a great time at the Valentines Art / Zine Fayre at Jaguar Shoes and don't forget to keep ordering your ICMLs through our online shop!
Cheerio.

It's been a while since we checked in, sorry. The Christmas period has been both indulgent and busy and we've been wrestling with snowy times and delayed mail to get all the copies of ICML # 3 out to those who ordered them. We will, however, be at the zine thing on at Jaguar Shoes, London where we will be selling the past 3 issues of ICML as well as probably doing something that befits the romantic nature of the day too. Our on-the-spot-hand-made posters went down a treat at another zine fair recently. Maybe we could up the romanticism involved in the art of poster making. I mean, look how happy the lady below was when we made her a poster...

Jamie has some work in a show at Plan 9 this week. It's a group show co-curated by Anouk Mercier, Dickon Drury and Adam Higton. Go check it out. Here's the details...
Preview: Friday 13 November 2009, 6-9pm
Exhibition continues: Saturday 14 - Sunday 22 November 2009
Gallery open: Thurs-Sat, 12-6pm
Nadine Byrne - Jamie Bracken Lobb - Craig Dixon - Adam Higton - Hakon Holm Olsen - Sophie Kern - Anouk Mercier - Andreas Samuelsson - Bristol Diving School
Friday 13th is a group exhibition celebrating the diverse ways in which drawing can inform art practice. As an integral part of completed artworks or one of several components forming a practice, drawing can be both a tool used to plan and design or a key element in the formulating of ideas and concepts. The works presented in the exhibition demonstrate through a range of styles and medium both the versatility of drawing and its continued relevance in art practices today. In doing so, they will illustrate the evolution of this particular art form to maintain a variety of roles in contemporary practices.
Drawing based events will take place within the gallery alongside the exhibition. These will be organised by the Bristol Drawing Club and will include a life drawing session as well as an informal drawing social where everyone is invited to come and draw in a relaxed and friendly environment. The Bristol Drawing Club runs regular sessions in various locations all over Bristol (http://drawing-club.blogspot.com).

The Event in Birmingham was both fun and educational. The best kind of fun... and education. We're currently working with a load of the people we met on our weekend visit with the aim of having Issue 3 completed by December 10th. Reasons why this date is so important will soon come to light.
Also, thanks to everyone who showed us around and and special thanks to Joe, Sarah and Linda for such warm hospitality.

These boys really do get aroud Part II...
Here are two of my favourite flag photos taken of Jersey City flags from Manhattan on a recent residency there. I really made optimum use of the digital zoom on my camera.

We will also be in Birmingham from tomorrow night (6pm, Friday, 6th November) for the weekend to attend all the wonderful art events that make up part of The Event, the second festival of artist-led activity in Birmingham. It's across many venues, but I found this on Art Rabbit:

The Artists' Book and Zine Fair was really, really fun. Below are some of our pictures from the day. (Note to web browser: behold the look of genuine joy on each person lucky enough to get a personalised ICML poster!)

Local rivals, The Bristol Diving School, were a little unamused at the size of our desk compared to their's.

Then a spot of inter-stall banter resulted in some quite nasty charactures by members of Nous Vous.

We couldn't bring ourselves to point out they had identical ballon faces, though.

Those boys get around!

Naoshima is a tiny island of contempory art just of the coast of the Okayama prefecture in Japan. It was lucky enough to host a member of ICML for a couple of days last Month! The place is packed full of amazing art, all visitable by foot. With two museums showing work from all the biggest names, as well as artworks dotted around the island, its a crazy experience.

The small village contains 5 houses, each taken on by a different artist to 'renovate' with complete freedom. Shinro Ohtake has turned his into a mad house with an S&M style room and a replica statue of Liberty poking through the two floors. The picture above is of the patchwork corrugated exterior.

Unfortunately its not cheap, so we had to skimp on accommodation. Luckily there where a couple of sculptures willing(?) to house us for the night. We started in the Dan Graham, which gave us a feeling of security with its sliding doors, but lacked the heat insulation of a roof. At about 1am it was time to jump ship, to the wreck of a ship. Shinro Ohtake's submerged sculpture provided perfect shelter from the wind, while the beach offered everything for the camp fire.

A lovely nights sleep was had by all. Now go visit!

Confirmed, ICML will be at Spike Island's artists' book and zine fair on the 31st of October. Along with issue 2, we will be providing a small, slow dance tent.
